Wiñay Wayna
Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District, Peru
Wiñay Wayna is the last major Inca site one sees along the Inca Trail before reaching the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu. Part of the stream that flows beside it was diverted by the Incas to form a fountain that runs by the steps leading down the terraces to a housing area. Notice the visitor in blue by the houses; he doesn't appear to be looking with great affection at the steep climb ahead of him. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
