Salkantay's Jewel
Cordillera Vilcabamba, Peru
One of the spectacular views from Inka Chiriaska (Condor) Pass, 5150 m. Covered with thick glaciers, Nevado Salkantay (20,574') is by far the biggest mountain I've ever seen; in recent years, though, its glaciers have retreated far enough to reveal this jewel of a lake. "Salkantay" translates as "savage mountain," perhaps explaining why there have been fewer than two dozen successful ascents of the peak. Photo © copyright by Greg Owens.
