Hiking the Subway

Zion Wilderness, Zion National Park, Utah, 2015

A hiker pauses mid-tunnel to enjoy the view through the Subway, a unique slot canyon cut by the left fork of North Creek.  Getting to the Subway even from the bottom is an adventure; the route takes you straight down a steep trail several hundred feet to the creek, where you hike upstream along the creek, across the creek, through the creek, and up and over and between boulders.  After about three miles of this, you come to a series of waterfalls over sandstone known collectively as Archangel Cascades, and the lower part of the Subway is just beyond them.
