Crystal Lake, Static and Kinetic Stars

Red Mountain Mining District, Colorado, 2014

This image gives a glimpse into the way I like to photograph the night sky, especially on a night with no moon.  In order to capture a "static" image of the Milky Way, enough light has to hit the sensor before the stars have a chance to move (much); I achieved that with a 25-second exposure.  But the foreground, with only the stars to light it, needed a longer exposure, so I dialed down the ISO (to reduce noise) and made an 8-minute exposure, long enough to create short star trails.  I then blended the two together to make the final image showing the static stars and their kinetic reflection.
