El Morro, Atsinna, ruins, photo

El Morro National Monument, New Mexico, 2014

At the top of El Morro sits the ruins of Atsinna, a village built in the 13th century by ancestors of modern-day Zunis.  It is thought that the people built the village in this elevated position in order to defend the waterhole at the base of the rock during a time of drought.
